South Africa-Canada Research Network Expands Opportunities for SSH Scholars
A new joint funding initiative between the NRF and SSHRC aims to foster international collaboration for South African and Canadian researchers.
In a significant boost for international research, the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada have launched a joint seed grant program. This initiative is designed to support collaborative projects that address global challenges through the lens of the social sciences. The program, which commenced its funding cycle in 2026, provides a unique platform for PhD graduates and established researchers to engage in cross-continental knowledge exchange. By facilitating 24 to 36-month projects, the partnership aims to strengthen the research capacity of both nations. Michael Nxumalo, a key figure in the NRFβs international partnerships, noted that this collaboration is essential for addressing shared global goals. For South African PhD candidates, this represents a vital opportunity to integrate into global research networks, potentially opening doors for post-doctoral fellowships and international academic mobility. Applicants are encouraged to leverage the NRF Connect system to submit proposals that demonstrate high-impact potential and interdisciplinary innovation.
